See you in Salt Lake City!

Hello February!   The national convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Salt Lake City, Utah is right around the corner.  I experienced my first ACDA convention (SWACDA in Corpus Christi, 1998) as an undergraduate student packed into a van with a handful of other undergrads from Arkansas Tech University.  It was an eye-opening and life-changing experience, and for the years that would follow and through my teaching time in public school to my current position at the University of Colorado Boulder, ACDA has served to inspire, encourage, and support my professional development.  It has become something that I look forward to each year–an opportunity to reconnect with friends, colleagues, and mentors–a chance to learn more about our craft as conductors and composers.  The concerts are stunning, the sessions inspiring & intriguing, and the opportunity to explore and review new music is unsurpassed.  This year, I’m especially thrilled to hear Waukee High School A Cappella premiere a new work written just for this event.  “Vision” (text by May Thielgaard Watts) describes the fresh perspective and newness of life when one has just found love.  Having a chance to work with the choir at their school in Des Moines last month, I was so impressed with their professionalism, musicianship, and attention to detail.  Their enthusiastic conductor Amy Hall has prepared a beautiful, balanced program and I can’t wait to hear it, along with “Vision” in Salt Lake City!

I’m also excited to share with you in an interest session I’m presenting on Friday Feb 27 at 11 am at the convention.  “Swagger, Gentlemanliness, and Brotherhood” will take a peek into an exceptional high school men’s chorus and explore the impact of this male chorus experience on the singers’ lives and identities.  We’ll also sing some male chorus rep, discuss male-specific neuroscience, and explore strategies for rehearsals and organization of men’s choruses.  Please join us for an information-rich, engaging session!

Finally, if you’d like to meet up and chat one-on-one, ACDA is offering a face-to-face session in which I’m available to visit for a series of 15 min chats on Saturday morning of the convention.  Sign up and let’s talk in person…
